Privacy Policy
Pronto is a commuter-rail and transit companion for the New York City area. This page explains what data Pronto collects, how it's used, and what it never does.
The short version
- Pronto has no accounts, no sign-in, and no user profiles on our servers.
- Your location is used only to power features you can see happening — finding your nearest station, flipping your commute direction, matching you to your train, and timing "leave now" reminders. It is not stored, not sold, and not shared with advertisers.
- Pronto does not use third-party analytics or advertising SDKs of any kind.
Location data
When you grant Pronto location access ("While Using the App"), your device's coordinates are sent to Pronto's server only when the app is open and only to compute a result — for example, "which station am I closest to" or "which train am I riding right now." The server computes the answer and returns it immediately; it does not save your coordinates or build a history of your movements. Standard, temporary web-server logs (the same kind any website keeps) may briefly include request details as part of normal operation, but Pronto does not use these logs to build a location history or profile of any individual user.
You can revoke location access at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Pronto, or turn off individual location-based features (like leave-now nudges) inside the app. Pronto works without location access — you'll just need to select your stations manually instead of relying on automatic detection.
Notifications
Leave-now nudges are scheduled entirely on your device using Apple's local notification system. Pronto does not send anything to a push-notification service, and no notification content or scheduling data leaves your phone.
What we don't collect
Pronto does not collect or have access to: your name, email address, phone number, contacts, photos, payment information, or any other personally identifying information. There is no account system, so there's nothing tied to your identity to begin with.
Data shared with transit and weather providers
To show real-time train, subway, and weather information, Pronto's server queries public data feeds operated by the MTA (Metro-North, LIRR, NYC Subway), NJ Transit, and Open-Meteo. These queries use only the information needed to answer the request (for example, a station's coordinates), never your identity, and Pronto does not share your personal location with these providers — only the anonymous station or route being looked up.
Data stored on your device
Your saved commute (stations, schedule, fare type), notification preferences, and app settings are stored locally on your device (and, for the home-screen widget, in a shared container accessible only to Pronto). This data is not transmitted to us except as needed to fetch live results (e.g., sending your saved stations to look up train times).
Children's privacy
Pronto is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in a material way, we'll update the "last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
